Florence Nightingales Urn Restoration Project

WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH CHILSTONE GARDEN ORNAMENTS

    Original Urn Condition

    Beginning the Restoration

    Original Urn Condition

The original urn, which was part of a limited collection of around 12 urns, had extensive damage. This particular urn was notably linked to Florence Nightingale, making its restoration crucial. J H Builders was invited by Chilstone Garden Ornaments to undertake the stone restoration project, ensuring that the ornamental stone was preserved for future generations.

    Initial Task

    Original Urn Condition

J H Builders collected Florence Nightingale's urn from her original home and transported it to Chilstone in Langton Green, where we had agreed to undertake the restoration of this ornamental stone in their workshop.

John initially started by removing a lot of the rim and other pieces of Florence Nightingale's urn, as it had been very badly glued together. John then rebuilt what he could, using ornamental stone to make up the missing areas and recreate the original design during the stone restoration process.

J H Builders were then able to use rubber and fibreglass to reconstruct a mould of Florence Nightingale's urn, ensuring that the ornamental stone was preserved during the stone restoration process.

Once the mould was complete, Chilstone then crafted a new copy of Florence Nightingale's urn by hand packing it with ornamental stone, utilizing reconstituted stone for durability in the stone restoration process.

Once the initial mould had been used and Florence Nightingale's urn came out well, additional copies were made from ornamental stone and returned to the original house for stone restoration.
